We are all new at the business of producing online content, so here I collect notes on what some of us have found, in no particular order:

How to, method 1 (Hubert()

For recording video: I use my old point-and-shoot camera for demos. I also use it pointing down on the table when I draw or write live on paper.

Some scenes are made with (animated) Powerpoint slides, and I use Loom on my laptop, using the webcam to get an inset of my face in the bottom left of the scene. Here I also use an external microphone for better audio quality.

I put everything together with ShotCut. If needed, I use Audacity to work on the sound.

Pro: everything is free
Con: Loom is cloud-based, so it can be slow depending on your internet connection

How to, method 2, using Prezi (Kathy, Caren)

Found this software ($40-$80 per year) very easy to use with a relatively short learning curve.
Prezi home

Pros:

  • 'Live' action when presenting.
  • Easy to use with laptop computer's camera
  • Can take powerpoint slides and incorporate them into the presentation (video)
  • Multiple screen options to display the following:
    1. Presenter only
    2. Presenter and content slides displayed
    3. Content slides only with audio in background
Can alternate between the above three styles to increase student interest
  • Free/Basic version fairly full featured
  • Audio can be recorded separately of video and content
  • Can pause audio when recording
  • Can 'erase' audio only and re-record audio without affecting video and content
  • Can 'trim' beginning or end of video.
  • Several export file types

Cons:

  • Program does not yet have 'flip' feature - materials shown on screen are mirror image [this has been fixed]
  • Cannot edit audio mid-track (I used a third party editing software to do this)

How to, method 3 (Andres)
These are free, and all browser-based, so there are no programs to download and install:
